We all had that tio, the salsero, the one with the record collection that came out on the weekends. It was the soundtrack to every family party—Celia Cruz, Johnny Pacheco, Ray Barretto, Hector Lavoe.

While the chiquitos were crashed out—safe on a bed like a pile of coats—the viejos danced all night to stories of murder, injustice, racism, and lovers done wrong.

The stories in Ritmo y Revenge take inspiration from that golden age of salsa. They syncopate tragedy with double entendre. They dance with the accents of the Caribbean diaspora. Reading these stories, you will hear the claves and feel the tumbao.
