Writing in Shorts– Colleen Helme

Colleen Helme is  the author of the bestselling Shelby Nichols Adventure Series.  Colleen is often asked if Shelby Nichols ** is her alter-ego. “Definitely,” she says. “Shelby is the epitome of everything I wish I dared to be.” Known for her laugh since she was a kid, Colleen has always tried to find the humor in every situation and continues to enjoy writing about Shelby’s adventures.

** Shelby is a PTA/Soccer Mom that has a talent for reading minds. She also has a blog/journal that is a lot of fun to read between books.

The 11th Shelby Nichols Adventure is Devil in a Dark Suit which will be released on February 27th.

When and why did you begin writing “in shorts”? Is it harder or easier than full-length novels?

My short story* in Happy Homicides #6 is my first. It was really hard for me to write a 10,000 word story and get everything in it that I wanted! I find there’s much more freedom to develop the characters and the story in a full-length novel.

What is your favorite short story anthology beside the Happy Homicide series?

Every once in a while, I enjoy a good sci-fi story and found Star Rebels: Stories of Space Exploration, Alien Races, and Adventure for free on Amazon. I’ve really enjoyed them.

As an author, what has been your most embarrassing moment, typo, or gaffe?

My most embarrassing moment as an author was working with an audible producer and offering him a considerable amount less than I should have – after realizing my gaffe, I raised my offer, and he accepted, but it was embarrassing.

What is your favorite vacation spot to be in shorts? (I want you to say Miami, but no pressure. wink)

I just sent my protagonist to Miami, so I’d have to agree with you! But for me, I’d like to say Paris! My main character, Shelby Nichols, had an adventure there, so naturally I had to go. Needless to say, I loved it, and I’d go back in a heartbeat!

Since this edition of Happy Homicides is food themed, I have to ask—What is your favorite comfort food?

Oh no – you’ll think less of me, but my comfort food has to be Cheetos and a Diet Coke!
